About Me

A passionate English educator of over a decade, I’ve taught everything from Creative Writing to AP English to Composition at the college level. As a former English Department Chair, I provided instructional coaching for the Humanities department, growing fellow teachers into more effective educators. I received my Masters in English Education at Columbia University, and have two Bachelor of Arts degrees, one in Comparative Literature and one in Spanish Language. I speak Spanish and have extensive experience working with students learning English as a second language. In 2016, I developed a curriculum for writing college admissions essays, and have since guided hundreds of students through the process.

I love working with students on the college admissions process. To me, it’s a rich opportunity for their personal growth (as well as mine, tbh). Through the essay prompts, institutions ask students to reflect on their experiences, their communities, and most importantly, their identity. Making students feel empowered during this time is the most important work I do and to be their advocate and cheerleader is a privilege.

I split my time between New York City and the Catskill Mountains, where I spent summers growing up. My husband Joe is the best person I know, and our favorite thing to do together is eat. I also spend a lot of time attempting to psychoanalyze the women on The Real Housewives.

A lot of the concepts taught in Margaret’s College Essay unit I still use today whenever I write an essay.

Margaret listened to us, was patient with us, and genuinely cared for us and we felt it...She made a stressful time feel special.

Engaging methods really set Ms. Egan apart from the average teacher. Today, I work in the advertising industry, where a portion of my job involves writing. I’m grateful to Ms. Egan for all the time she put into helping me become a better writer. Thank you!

My greatest writing accomplishments took place in Ms. Egan’s AP English class. She helped me understand how to write to actually express myself fully and not just to complete an assignment. I was more of a sciences person...but in Ms. Egan’s class, I began to understand that writing is about more than just school.

Growing up as a first-generation American whose first language isn’t English was very difficult, especially when it came to writing! However, everything changed when Ms. Egan became my English teacher. I’ve never had another teacher like Ms. Egan: sweet, devoted, and patient! When there were issues in my writing, she coached me without making me feel self-conscious. I thank her for never making me feel any less than the rest of the class....Ms. Egan is one of those teachers you will never forget about!

Thanks to Margaret’s writing course, I was able to find topics to write about. Usually, I struggle with figuring out what to write about, but in Margaret’s class, I was able to find a story, a flow, and most importantly a way to express myself. I’m forever grateful for what she’s done for me.

Throughout my time working with Margaret, my writing developed at an alarming rate. I struggled to organize my thoughts into words, but by the end of our time together, I was not only able to write my Personal Statement but also all other college-level essays with much more ease and confidence.

If it weren’t for Ms. Egan I honestly don’t even think I would be reading any books.
